History of The Melting Pot

For more than three decades, The Melting Pot has defined the fondue experience niche across the American dining scene and now looks forward to continued domestic success as well as continued international expansion.

The first Melting Pot opened in April of 1975 in Maitland, Fla., just outside of Orlando. It was a cozy, quaint location, and its first menu consisted of just three items: Swiss cheese fondue, beef fondue and a chocolate fondue dessert. However, as the restaurant’s popularity expanded, so did its menu and ambiance.

Mark Johnston, who was working his way through college as a waiter at The Melting Pot, noticed the popularity boost and, with the help of his brothers Mike and Bob, scraped together funding to open The Melting Pot of Tallahassee in 1979 (with the blessing of the original owners in Maitland... of course). The Tallahassee location grew enormously popular, and within one year, its success paved the way for future franchise expansion.

In 1981, the Johnston brothers decided to branch out and opened their second location in Tampa. As their business grew, the brothers began to consider franchising even more stores in order to expand

Then in 1985, Mark, Mike and Bob Johnston purchased all rights to The Melting Pot brand and established The Melting Pot Restaurants, Inc., the new franchise company. After a year of research and reorganization, The Melting Pot Restaurants, Inc. began its franchise offering.

From the start, the Johnston brothers were diligent in their search for energetic entrepreneurs who were as excited as they were about the concept and its potential. Their commitment to building a close knit fondue family proved successful.

In 2010, The Melting Pot Restaurants celebrated its 35th anniversary, opened its first international location in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, signed a seven-unit deal in Mexico and opened its first Mexico location in Mexico City.

Today, with more than 140 locations across North America and more than 15 locations in development, The Melting Pot Restaurants, Inc., is the premier fondue restaurant franchise. The Melting Pot is an affiliate of Front Burner Brands, a restaurant management company headquartered in Tampa, Fla.

It's a great place for an afternoon drink or breakfast. The atmosphere inside is beautiful with the candles and outside the street tables are strait out of a street scene in Paris.
This is a bistro in the truest sense: a place you can come almost anytime for any occasion. They serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner, have a bakery, and also an excellent bar with some great happy hour food and drink deals every day from 5-7, such as a pasta with cream sauce, turkey and asparagus. very delicoius.

This elegant old-style brasserie – with mirrored walls, dark banquettes & low lighting – once again has chef Henry Harris at its helm. He has no truck with fashionable foams & froths, instead going straight for the senses with fulsome versions of ultra-traditional dishes – tender grilled rabbit with mustard sauce, fillet steak au poivre, sublimely textured duck confit. True, the menu features a few innovations (mussels with a silky-smooth garlic & saffron mousse, say), but Harris’s roots lie firmly in the reassuring world of cuisine grandmère. The open kitchen deploys top-drawer ingredients to telling effect in the tasting menu, a cavalcade of intense, finely calibrated treats: the famous mini burger with foie gras & caramelised bell pepper; a scallop in its shell with delicious seaweed-infused butter seasoned with Espelette pepper; a layered construction of crab meat, fennel, tomato jelly & avocado guacamole served in a ceramic egg. High in the rarefied upper reaches of the London Hilton, Chris Galvin’s window on the world (well, the metropolis & beyond) continues to provoke gasps of astonishment from everyone who ascends to the glamorous 28th floor. This is a big, bullish operation with wrap-around views & an egalitarian approach to its customers (bring must-impress clients, romantic dates, even your mum & dad for something rather special). It’s also a serious, slickly run restaurant that doesn’t stint on the grand gestures. The cooking indulges diners with thoughtful, precision-tuned modern French food such as ham hock en gelée or mackerel tartare, rillettes & avruga caviar to start. Sturdy centrepieces stay true to the seasons – perhaps roast partridge breast with toasted pearl barley, sweetcorn agnolotti & game bouillon – likewise desserts such as greengage clafoutis with marzipan ice cream. A first-growth vintage among London’s French restaurants, Bleeding Heart holds a special affection for Square Meal readers, judging by the yearly influx of (mostly complimentary) reports. Tucked in the corner of a cobbled courtyard (sit outside in summer), this place is ‘something very special indeed’ – spread over several distinctive rooms furnished in homely style with antique mirrors & fireplaces, framed drawings & a profusion of fresh flowers. The staunchly French menu (‘a real journey through the senses’) delivers incomparable chateaubriand & glorious Gallic cheeses, but also shows some modern touches: cannon of smoked eel comes with a horseradish mousse; cauliflower tempura accompanies sautéed fillet of salmon. Some complain of ‘over-zealous’ waiters, but most rave about the slick, professional & pleasantly eccentric service.
